Family governance is often built to prevent what a family doesn't want to happen: rules, policies, and structures designed to manage risk or avoid conflict. That's a defensive posture. Strategic governance asks a different question: how can governance help the family achieve what it does want?

As families grow and move through generations, their governance needs to evolve with them. Professor Matt Allen will explore how families can think more intentionally about the purpose their governance serves, so it keeps pace with the family rather than staying fixed in place.

Rather than maintaining structures because they've always existed, or because they're considered best practice, families can build governance around their own values, goals, and circumstances. Treated as a living system, governance can create opportunity, strengthen trust and transparency, engage the next generation, and help the family and its enterprises thrive over time.
